Job Description
The Agile BioFoundry (ABF) requires a Strategy & Research Lead to support the execution of ABF’s mission in the synthetic biology and biomanufacturing research areas, specifically in the area of business and program development, by promoting and facilitating the adoption of ABF tools and technologies by the biomanufacturing industry. The individual will support a highly productive team on multiple levels, including industry engagement, strategic direction, proposal writing and other, related activities. This position will also have frequent, high-level interactions with the Department of Energy (DOE), industrial partners, and external clients. This position will report to the ABF Executive Committee.
The desired candidate for this position will be astute, intuitive, and discerning in their ability to work with a large, diverse team who represent a wide range of expertise. The work at times will require quick thinking and agility in moving between tasks, as well as short turnaround times on deliverables. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to combine strategic planning with excellent work habits and communication skills.
The selected candidate will support a number of stakeholders, including PIs, researchers, internal and external contacts, and other members of the ABF team, often simultaneously. The specific duties associated with this position include the following:
  • Manage the business development activities of the ABF Consortium, including internal briefings to DOE, leading industry engagement, and conducting strategic planning for industry engagement.
  • Interface frequently with the ABF’s DOE sponsor office, the Bioenergy Technologies Office, and others as required.
  • Lead discussions with collaborators and organize multiple collaborative research efforts and activities across multiple institutions in the United States and abroad.
  • Manage ABF collaboration projects portfolio, including complex contract execution for new projects. Monitor and supervise contracting pipeline to ensure timely execution, brokering solutions to issues when required.
  • Manage relationship and partnership prospect tracking process.
  • Explore contracting mechanisms by which future collaboration projects may be executed.
  • Conduct research to understand challenges and pain points in biomanufacturing, relating these to existing ABF skills and capabilities where possible. Identify opportunities in terms of new capabilities and value propositions for the ABF, and provide insight into the task prioritization process.
  • Manage the ABF’s growing IP portfolio, and explore opportunities for pushing technologies out to industry.
  • Work closely with the existing project management team members to support high-level and day-to-day functions of the ABF Consortium.
  • Work with the engagement and outreach team to build key relationships with external partners and industry stakeholders to fund R&D activities &/or collaborate on proposals.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of internal and external projects, including scientific progress and areas of concern.
  • Communicate potential issues to the relevant PI and/or the rest of the project management team as needed. Attend regular science update meetings.
  • Present at meetings or events, both internal and external, as a key representative to the group’s mission. Must be able to communicate scientific principles with reasonable confidence.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in sustainability applications of biology and/or chemistry.
  • General knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Ability to use various computer software programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in project or program management.
  • Demonstrated experience in consortia and industry partnership development.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Expert multi-tasker, able to manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Knowledge of synthetic biology / biomanufacturing and the ability to communicate the ABF’s technologies, products, and services with stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand market trends and emerging challenges in the biomanufacturing industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teaming and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to travel as needed and engage in public speaking events.
  • An exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $93,100 - $167,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
